Way in the back of your throat are gland-like tissues called tonsils. They exist to keep bacteria out. Comprised of little folds and crevices, it is not uncommon for bacteria, mucous and small debris to accumulate there. As these small deposits harden, or calcify, tonsil stones are formed. Typically, Tonsil Stones, which are also called tonsilloliths, remain quite small and do not cause any issues. It is possible, however, for the stones to become larger and be a nuisance. Often, one of the primary signs that a person has larger tonsil stones in the presence of persistent bad breath. The stones emit a pungent sulfur compound with a strong smell. Some people are able to see the stones on the tonsils and others experience a tight sensation or have difficulty when swallowing.
There are several different ways to handle Tonsil Stones and make the person more comfortable if experiencing any pain. In those who have no adverse symptoms, the stones can just be ignored. As long as they are small and are not causing discomfort, some choose to just do nothing. Some people will remove the stones at home by dislodging them with a pick or swab. For those who suffer discomfort, a salt water gargle can be quite soothing. If accompanied by infection, antibiotics my be warranted. In extreme cases, where the stones cause an obstruction occur with tonsils that remain inflamed and infected, surgical removal may be the only option. Removal of the tonsils alleviates any chance of recurrence.
While some treatments at home can alleviate symptoms, a visit to your physician can rule out a more serious underlying condition. Knowing what Tonsil Stones are and what you can do about them is the first step in making a decision about your specific situation.
