Unfortunately, children are not immune to yeast infections. They can get it as well as adults. Treating yeast infections is pretty much the same for children as it is adults, although there are additional steps you need to take when treating your child. A child may have an infection due to a poor diet, hygiene, weak immune system, etc. Sometimes soaps and bath products can cause infections as well.

Depending on the age of the child, you may also want to consider using natural treatments to relieve the symptoms and improve the situation. Obviously, some adult medications and remedies aren’t suitable for children, so if you are unsure about anything, ask a doctor for advice about a particular treatment.

When treating yeast infections, you need to educate your child about the condition and what he or she can do to prevent it in the future. You need to guide your child to understand the possible behaviors that could have contributed to the problem, and why such behaviors need to be changed.

Here are some important factors to consider:

-When children bathe, it’s important that they use mild soaps. This is because an infection can be caused by strong, scented soaps or bubble bath products. Another important thing to consider is whether or not your child is drying off fully after a bath. Sometimes trapped moisture can cause infections.

-Assess the quality of clothing your child wears. Sometimes treating yeast infections is as simple as wearing cotton clothing. Tight clothing in fabrics such as lycra can be a contributing factor to the problem. Make sure your child wears comfortable, cotton underclothing.

-Toileting is very important. Wiping needs to be done from front to back, not the other way around. Back to front wiping can cause the yeast infection to spread. Talk with your child so that he or she understands how to wipe appropriately. Also, make sure your younger children ARE wiping as they are supposed to after using the toilet. Doing so will help limit the infection and to keep it from reoccurring. -Natural treatments can be the best options. Natural anti-fungals, for instance,

can be really effective. Many people swear up and down by the effectiveness of tea tree oil. It is supposed to be one of the best remedies for treating yeast infections in older children and adults both. For younger children, though, anti-fungal medications and topical ointments might not be the best option. Ask a doctor’s advice and look for a less harsh solution. -Be careful with certain antibiotics. Some antibiotics will reduce the amount of ‘good bacteria’ in the intestine, which will give the bad Candida organisms a chance to grow. If you are concerned that an antibiotic can be leading to the yeast infection in your child, you can address the imbalance by including yogurts with Probiotics in your child’s diet. Also, ask a doctor for other helpful recommendations.

A holistic, natural approach toward treating yeast infections in your child is a great way to control the underlying causes and to prevent the problem from growing. It’s important to control the infection before it spreads so that it doesn’t become a reoccurring problem. You wouldn’t want your child to go through this problem repeatedly. Guide your child with these tips to help him or her get right back on track to being healthy again!
