Have you encountered any commercial ads about nutritional supplements lately? Well if you answered NO then it’s either you’re joking or … you’re a caveman accidentally warped into this modern era (but if you are a caveman,

I applaud you for being able to browse around the internet and read this). In our world today, I will not be surprised if you are confused as to what appropriate supplement to choose for you and for your family as these supplements come in different form and sizes. But now let’s focus on a particular type of supplement, the liquid nutritional supplements.

Liquid Nutritional Supplements are generally nutrients in liquid form. It is usually composed of water, milk, sugar, soy proteins, oils, vitamins and minerals. And to further get ourselves familiar with it we shall later compare liquid nutritional supplements with those solid-forms of supplements such as pills and capsules.

First, let’s enumerate the advantages of liquid nutritional supplements over supplements in solid forms:

This type of supplement is appropriate for those who are on a liquid diet or it can be also taken by patients who experience swallowing difficulty.

This is also appropriate for children and senior citizens, they are usually the ones difficult to convince to take supplements but since liquid nutritional supplements can come in delicious flavors, it will make the supplement appealing for them.

There is direct absorption of nutrients contained in the liquid nutritional supplement by the body compared to solid ones and with that, nutrients are faster absorbed in liquid form supplements.

As for the disadvantage of this type of supplement, the most prominent one is since it tastes so good, people tend to take it more than the recommended dosage needed thus over dosage may occur.

And now let’s say that you decided to choose this over supplements in pills or capsules. Now, here are some tips that might be helpful as you compare liquid nutritional supplements that will be most suitable for you:

To minimize confusion, do seek your doctor’s advice or any professional expert in that field like a pharmacist or dietician to guide you on what supplement is best for your body.

In choosing the right supplement, read the labels and these must be at least present in the supplement: folic acid, iron, calcium, and various vitamins.

To avoid the over dosage problem, check on the package how much dosage is needed to be taken per day and follow them as well, if it says I teaspoon per day, do follow even if it is tempting to have more due to its good taste.

Since the flavor appeals to patients, chances are that it contains artificial flavors or fillers so be careful and make sure that the product doesn’t contain any. To check, read the label and see if any of the following is present: sugar, starch, gluten and silica.  These are the commonly used fillers that is not at all helpful to the body.

Be careful not to get fooled by advertisements that claim that these liquid nutritional supplements are enough to provide nutrients in your body even if you skip a meal. Always remember that there is no substitute to the food that we eat and taking herbal supplements while skipping meals is also the same as not taking any supplement at all. This is because there’s no nutrient available in the body for the supplements to enhance with.

Now that you know this, I guess you’re now a smart(er) buyer and with choosing the right product, you may now be more confident that you are not risking in spending your money and health for nothing.
