It’s a beautiful Sunday and today was a big step for the participants. The plan was for a 1.5 min walk, 5min jog, 25 min run,and cool down. The longest continuos run up to now,(Remember,it’s duration that counts, not distance)was 15-20 minutes so this was a big jump on a humid day. I went over to watch my runner run and it was truly inspiring. She did extremely well, now able to find that point where you’re balanced, your energy output is sustainable, your stride is comfortable, and your breathing is typical and comfortable. There were over 30 people jogging around the course this morning, some chatting, some not but everyone in a calm comfortable state. To think that many of these individuals were sedentary before the Couch to 5K and in 6 weeks have progressed from walking to comfortable running is truly admirable.

Now for the problem. This program is a social activity where everyone suffers together and camaraderie carries the day. In three weeks that won’t be true. It’s another month before the 5K run and what happens now that the leaders are gone?

Some runners are solitary and introspective during their exercise while others do better with people. If the group training has carried you through the program so far, you’re definitely not alone and it’s important for your continued success to gather some friends and keep up the running together. Individual running is great if you’re experienced but if not you’ll maintain a better pace and run longer with people.

More to come.
Be Well

Dr Steve
